Alternator not building voltage after overhaul
Brushless alternator, 440 V. After the overhaul it runs up to speed but the voltage stays close to zero. We fitted a spare AVR and nothing changed. What should I check next?
Every new ship carries more automation than the last: power management, PLC-controlled machinery, integrated bridges, electric propulsion, battery rooms. Each of them needs an officer on board who understands it, and the demand for ETOs keeps growing year after year.
Much of what keeps those systems running has never been written down. It lives with the ETOs who have spent years at sea. Community is where their experience reaches the officers and cadets coming up behind them, and where the answers stay for whoever meets the same fault next.
Pass on what took you years to learn, somewhere it will still be found next year.

Check the exciter field first. An overhaul can leave it with no residual magnetism, and then the AVR has nothing to build on, which is why a new one changed nothing. Flash the field: with the set at rated speed and the AVR field leads disconnected, touch a 12 V battery across the exciter field, correct polarity, for a second or two. Reconnect, and follow the maker's procedure for your machine.

Type the fault or the alarm text. If someone has solved it, it shows up before you post.
Not there? Post it with the equipment, the maker and what you have already checked.
ETOs who have met it reply. The community votes up what makes sense.
When an answer works on your ship, mark it. It becomes the answer for everyone after you.
