1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains what information Elec-Buddy collects when you use our exam preparation platform for marine Electro-Technical Officers, how we use it, and the choices available to you. It should be read alongside our Terms and Conditions.

By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.

2. Information We Collect

Category	What we collect
Account information	Full name, email address, and a securely hashed password (we never see or store your password in plain text).
Payment information	Plan purchased, amount paid, and the order and payment identifiers returned by Razorpay. We do not collect or store your card number, UPI ID, or net banking credentials; these are handled directly by Razorpay.
Study activity	Which topics you have read, your progress through them, and your quiz results, so you can pick up where you left off and track your revision.
Device information	A random identifier your browser generates and stores on your own device, together with a rough description such as "Chrome on Windows", used to enforce the per-account device limit described in our Terms. This is not a fingerprint: we do not measure your hardware, screen, fonts, or anything else about your machine, and the identifier cannot be used to recognise you on any other website or under any other account. Clearing your browser data replaces it, and the old one simply becomes a device you can remove in Settings.
Technical data	Standard web request information such as browser type and IP address, collected automatically as part of normal server operation.
Usage analytics	Aggregate, privacy-friendly page-view analytics that do not identify you individually or track you across other websites.
Upgrade activity	When you open the upgrade window, choose a plan, or reach the payment screen, we record that step against your account, along with any error that stopped a payment going through. This is how we find out whether checkout is broken for people, rather than only seeing that they did not buy. We do not record your browsing, what you study, your IP address, or anything outside these few steps, and none of it is shared with anyone or used to track you elsewhere.

3. How We Use Your Information

to create and maintain your account, and to verify your identity when you sign in;
to grant and enforce access to the content your subscription covers;
to process payments and send you a receipt and confirmation of your access dates;
to send trial and subscription expiry reminders, and other service-related emails such as a welcome message when you sign up;
to save your reading progress and quiz scores across sessions and devices;
to enforce the device limit and detect account sharing that would breach our Terms;
to respond to support requests you send us;
to understand, in aggregate, how the Service is used, so we can improve it.

We do not sell your personal information to anyone, and we do not use your study data or account details for third-party advertising.

4. Third-Party Service Providers

We rely on the following providers to operate the Service. Each processes a limited set of your information solely to perform its function for us:

Provider	Purpose
Supabase	Database, authentication, and secure storage of your account and study data.
Razorpay	Payment processing. Handles your card, UPI, or net banking details directly; we never receive them.
Resend	Delivery of transactional emails, such as payment receipts, welcome messages, and expiry reminders.
GoatCounter	Privacy-focused, cookie-free page-view analytics.

We do not permit these providers to use your information for any purpose other than providing their service to us.

5. Data Storage and Security

Passwords are never stored in plain text; authentication is handled by Supabase using industry-standard hashing.
Database access is restricted with row-level security, so your data is only readable by you and by authorised administrative functions, never by other subscribers.
Paid study content is encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM, so that access requires an active, verified subscription.
All data in transit between your device and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS.

No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we take reasonable, industry-standard measures to protect your information.

6. Cookies and Local Storage

Elec-Buddy uses your browser's local storage, not third-party advertising cookies, to keep the app working smoothly. This includes your signed-in session, theme preference, Data Saver setting, and your last reading position, so the app remembers your preferences and progress between visits. This data stays on your own device and is not shared with advertisers.

7. Data Retention

We retain your account and study data for as long as your account remains active, so that your progress and access history are preserved.

When you delete your account, we permanently remove your profile, your name and email address, your study progress and quiz results, and every device registered to you. This happens after a 30 day grace period, during which you can still sign in and cancel.

Two things deliberately survive that deletion:

Your payment records, including the email address and name they were made under. We are required to retain financial records for accounting and tax purposes, and without them we could not process a later refund or respond to a bank dispute on your behalf. Razorpay separately retains its own record of any transaction, which is outside our control.
A one way cryptographic hash of your email address, so that a deleted account cannot be used to claim a second free trial or re-use a single-use discount code. A hash cannot be reversed into your address, is not used to contact you, and is not used for any other purpose.

8. Your Rights

You may contact us at any time to:

request a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
correct inaccurate account information, such as your name or email address;
request deletion of your account and associated personal data.

You can delete your account yourself, at any time, from Profile → Settings → Delete account in the app. You will be told exactly what is removed and what is kept before you confirm, and you have 30 days to change your mind: nothing is destroyed until then, your access continues as normal in the meantime, and we email you a confirmation with a link to cancel. To cancel, sign in and press Keep my account. If you would rather we did it for you, email support@elec-buddy.com from your registered address.

9. Children's Privacy

Elec-Buddy is intended for maritime professionals and cadets preparing for ETO certification, and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 18.

10. Where Your Data Is Stored

Your account and study data are stored on servers located in India (Mumbai region), in accordance with applicable data protection laws.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to the Service or applicable law. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version. Continued use of the Service after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
